If the “release clause” has not been agreed by the player, it is not even an annex to the employment contract. It is just a unilateral declaration by the club signalling it is not about to sell and terminate the contract early from its side whatever the player wants or not.
So Edward is of course talking bollocks as usual.

"A contract doesn't mean fuck all?"
Yes it does. Its a legally binding document which states that West Ham United own Declan Rice and that if another club wants him they will have to pay us to release him from that contract.

They're grooming Kral to replace him.

Unless we suddenly make the leap to the next level, which admittedly is more likely that it’s ever been given the platform we have now - we will never be able to offer the money or the consistent opportunities for success he’ll need to keep him.
It’s not really in the club’s interest to keep him beyond the end of this season unless he is prepared to extend his contract.
Still, champions league next year might change that calculation.

Why must we assume he wants to leave - one year blah blah. Enjoy it while you can etc. The bloke seems to have some old fashioned values - has already said he loves the club - teammates etc. He’s the captain and will be for many years. If we give him close to what he wants then all things are possible. If we have a successful year then it’s all the more likely he may stay.

I've not said that. I've just made the point that a contract means fuck all.
However, the lad turned his back on a nation. Rightly so, but it shows how single minded he is about his career.
Players have the power in football now, if they choose to use it. If he thinks it will get in the way of him moving on, he won't sign a contract with a £100mil release clause.

If you reckon Rice is going to do a Payet, you've lost your marbles, Edward.

Yeah, because we've never had a situation where a player is under contract but kicked up a fuss so we had to sell at well under what we thought their worth was.
Not for the last couple of years anyway...

He has a contact until 2024, so 2 1/2 years. If some one wants him they pay close to 100m it's as simple as that.

Don't want him to leave but with the 'top four' all allegedly interested we must be able to get well over £100m for him. Will our new Recruitment guru also deal with transfers out?

It would depend on where he would want ti go, the conpetition, the ability to persuade him to stay or the threshold at which cashing in makes sense plus any other deals or benefits that could be achieved.

The release clause fee will be whatever city/Chelsea/Utd tell his agent they’d be willing to pay before the new contract is signed

If they don't want him whom else are we selling to.
These clubs have silly money and paying over the odds.
Why should we give them a cut price deal of 80 mil

So we got ManU ,Liverpool, possible Chelsea and man city. Supposedly wanting rice. If the can pay what they did for lukaku, grealish, sancho they can pay 150 mil for Rice.
I don't see why not as how much are thier players in the same position worth if they want him he would replace those midfielders.
